Scientist tasks pig farmers on nutritious, affordable feed

An animal scientist Dr. Sabra Husim, has called on pig farmers in Nigeria to ensure feeding their pigs with nutritious feeds for improved growth as reported by Voice of Nigeria.

Husim, who is the General Manager, Top Feed, an animal nutrition company in Ibadan Oyo state, South-West Nigeria, made the call at a summit organised by the Netherlands Alumni Association, Nigeria Practical Training Centre Chapter.

The summit with the theme, “Recent Advances in Pig and Feed Value Chain in Developing Countries’’, was held at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan.

Husim said that feeds represented the highest cost factor of any animal production enterprise, and urged farmers to ensure making pig farming a highly profitable and professional agri-business.

The animal scientist said that, if well managed, residuals and by-products of some crops could be upgraded to make excellent feed with the cheapest cost per gain.

The representative of the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Ibrahim Udoh, said that the Netherlands Government supported the development of agriculture in Nigeria.

Udoh said that the government is rolling out programmes in areas of horticulture and livestock as a way of supporting Nigeria’s agriculture.

He said that agriculture had the potential to address poverty, climate change and malnutrition.

The IAR&T Executive Director, Prof. Veronica Obatolu, said that livestock offered potential for growth of the economy by generating employment and income for the youth, especially.

Obatolu, represented by the IAR&T Deputy Director, Dr. Jelili Saka, said that IAR&T had a mandate for research into the development of livestock adapted to the Southern agro-ecology.

Earlier, the Netherlands Alumni Association National President, Dr. Atinuke Akinyemi, said that the summit was aimed at improving indigenous pig and the unidentified breeds.
