Experts have recommended to the Kwara Transition Committee that the incoming government should focus more on agricultural value chain, rapid infrastructure development, women and youth empowerment.

Experts have recommended to the Kwara Transition Committee that the incoming government should focus more on agricultural value chain, rapid infrastructure development, women and youth empowerment.

The experts made the recommendation at a workshop organised by the Kwara Transition Committee.

The committee spent the last few days of its work listening to scholars and entrepreneurs on how the new administration can maximise the state’s agricultural potentials, engender growth and build an inclusive society that empowers women and youths.

A resource person, Dr Limota Giwa, of the U.S.-based Global Fund, urged the new administration to convene an all-women summit to draw up a policy directed at empowering them.

Giwa said women desired to be respected and properly represented in the decision making process as members of the society.

An Agricultural Economist from the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI) Mr. Kingley Olurinde, advised the incoming government to invest in irrigation farming.

Olurinde was of the view that the state had the potential to be food and nutrition-secure if the right measures were put in place.

“Kwara has good volume of surface and underground water. But the irrigation facilities are just not there.

Once rain ceases, there is a problem. No country in the world develops from only rain-fed agriculture.

Kwara must invest in irrigation to allow for all-year-round farming,” the Agriculture expert said.

Bolade Agbola, another resource person, urged the new administration to be creative in its revenue drive and efforts to cope with population surge.
